Time For Proper Football Once Again

The lamentable showing by our over-hyped, overpaid & utterly insipid National team in the World Cup has left a sour taste in the mouth of Seadog Blog.

I need some "footballing mouthwash" and it will come this Saturday (3rd July) when Scarborough Athletic FC start preparations for the 2010-11 season.

The Seadogs will play a friendly against Eastfield St James. The game will be played at the Yorkshire Coast College with a 3pm start.

Scarborough Athletic FC - Fans Forum on 7th July

Scarborough Athletic FC - New Ground For The Seadogs "within three years" ?

"SCARBOROUGH remains "committed" to a new football stadium - and sports facilities could be built in a minimum of three years, council chiefs insist."

That is the attention grabbing opening paragraph of this article in "The Scarborough Evening News" today:

Sports facilities in 3 years?

It would seem the proposals put before the Council Cabinet three days ago were well received! This is getting extremely encouraging.

Scarborough Athletic FC - Stadium Dream Moves Forward

A nice article in today's "Scarborough Evening News" highlights today's Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet meeting, and in particular the hopes for a Sports Village and a new home for Scarborough Athletic FC. The link is below:

Stadium dream moves forward

Seadog Blog hopes the Cabinet meeting is positive, the road ahead will be rocky in these days of austerity but it seems that the seeds of a new home may well be planted - let's hope they grow!

This is a tiny picture of how the site at Weaponess Valley looks today:

Progress on a new Sports Village & new ground for Scarborough Athletic FC?

Scarborough Borough Council will hold a Cabinet meeting at 10am on Tuesday, 22nd June, 2010 that could prove to be fundamental for the future of Scarborough Athletic F.C and other many other sporting interests in Scarborough.

On the agenda for the meeting is item A8  "Development of Sports Village" and the Cabinet are asked to "consider a joint report by the Strategic Director (Hilary Jones) and Head of Tourism and Culture"

Please read the agenda item in full here Agenda Item A8  (it is in PDF format)

Having read and digested this item Seadog Blog finds renewed optimism flowing through his veins.

It should be noted that the two signatories to the item (Council officials Brian Bennett and Hilary Jones) will both be in attendance at the Fans Forum to be held on Wednesday 7th July at 7.30pm to speak about the Weaponness Valley Sports Village project.

Everyone is invited to attend, not just SAFC fans.

The date may be changed at short notice if England should be playing in the World Cup semi's on that nigh

It is very important that as many Seadogs as possible are in attendance to ask questions of the two councillors and the board of Scarborough Athletic. This is vital. It is not just important; nearly everything revolves round it.

If you have read the article you will have seen reference made to the Princes Park home of Dartford F.C.

Below is a panoramic view of this ground and that should get the juices of anticipation going. A hat-tip to tims92 who provided the picture.

Join the Facebook group "Unity for football in Scarborough"

There is a growing momentum for unity for football in Scarborough, led, not least, by the current chairman of Scarborough Athletic FC.

If you are unaware, two clubs sprang up from the liquidation of Scarborough FC - Athletic in 2007 and Town in 2008.

In the recent past relations between the two clubs have been cool to say the least with both outfits competing for the affections of local supporters and  oh-so-sparse sponsorship money.  Internet trolling on the messageboards has not helped the situation and it has all been a big turn-off to many neutrals.

The most ridiculous and saddening aspect of all this is that until July 2007 all Town and Athletic supporters were brothers & sisters who supported Scarborough FC. Now we are divided and neither club will be able to realise their full potential.

It does not have to be this way.

UNITED WE CONQUER, DIVIDED WE FALL

Therefore Seadog Blog invites you to join a Facebook group which has been set up that champions the cause of a united Scarborough Football Club:

Scarborough Athletic FC - Chairman Calls For Unity

The Chairman of Scarborough Athletic FC has made a call for unity between Scarborough Athletic FC and Scarborough Town FC. The article, which was published in today's Scarborough Evening News, can be read here:

Chairman Calls For Unity

Seadog Blog wishes the Chairman well in his sensible campaign for unified football in Scarborough.

Seadog Blog is also pleased to note the 2nd paragraph which clearly states that Athletic were one of the teams to vote Town into the Northern Counties East League. This is important for everyone to know because, regrettably, some "misinformed souls" have been putting out messages to the contrary - we now know the refreshing truth. Well done Athletic.

Ex-Seadog Leo Bertos plays in the World Cup Finals

Leo Bertos has today made a little bit of Scarborough football history.

He plays for New Zealand today in their World Cup fixture against Slovakia.

This makes him the first (and very very probably the only) former player of Scarborough Football Club to play in the World Cup Finals.*

To be truthful Leo's Seadog career was brief and not particularly distinguished. He played just the once (in 2005-06) and that one game ended in a 1-5 reverse away at Forest Green Rovers.

But once a Seadog, always a Seadog so hearty congratulations to him.

*Gordon Banks did guest in goal for Scarborough FC in the 1970's but that was in a Anglo-Italian tournament and not a competitive league fixture.

Scarborough Athletic FC - Seadogs to face Welsh team Merthyr Town in The Supporters Direct Shield.

The Seadogs have an early pre-season opportunity to lift some silverware.

It has been announced that Scarborough Athletic will lock horns with the newly-formed Merthyr Town FC to contest the inaugural Supporters Direct Shield. The game will take place on Saturday 24th July at the New Bucks Head, home of AFC Telford Utd. Following our Shield game FCUM will take on AFC Telford Utd for the Supporters Direct Cup - it will be a double-header of fan owned football

The Supporters Direct Shield is competed for by supporter-owned teams (presumably in the lower steps of the pyramid) and is provided by "Supporters Direct" the organisation formed to increase supporter representation in football.

Our opponents were originally due to have been Chester FC but they withdrew due to the uncertainty that currently surrounds their starting place in the pyramid & so the Welshmen stepped in to take their place.

I don't know too much about Merthyr Town but they do seem to have many things in common with 'Boro namely they are a reformed team that has risen from the ashes of a well-respected former top non-league club. Like ourselves they have lost their ground and have to groundshare away from home and, just like we had to, they are starting out at the bottom (or near bottom of the pyramid) - in their case the Western League. They are also, of course, fan owned.

This article below gives a bit more information about Merthyr Town and the event itself: Merthyr Town v Scarborough Athletic details

Whatever happens in the Shield Seadog Blog wishes Merthyr Town all the best and hopes they can embark on a speedy rise back up through the leagues, get back home, and soon be in a position that befits the heritage and long tradition of football in their town.

Scarborough Athletic FC - New Management Team For The Reserves

Seadog Blog is delighted to see that a new management team is now in place for Scarborough Athletic reserves.

Steve Brennan is the new manager and his assistant manager will be Adam Stubbs.

Brennan is the current manager and founder of the East Coast Futsal side, and will continue in that role, forming a new partnership between SAFC and the Futsal team.

Stubbs is a former local league player also, who has featured for the Futsal team as a player. He also featured as a trialist in Boro's first ever fixture against Edgehill, coming on as a second half sub.

The reserves will be playing in the Humber Premier League Division One next season and will be hoping to step up a gear - in the last two seasons the reserves have finished mid-table.

A big boost is that the reserves will be playing much closer to home this season - at FC Filey's Sports Complex rather than the "out-of-sight-and-out-of-mind" scenario they suffered when having to play in Hutton Cranswick.

Scarborough Athletic FC - Seadogs programme voted best in NCEL Premier

Well done to James Hunter who edits the Scarborough Athletic FC matchday programme.

Always a colourful and interesting read, the programme has been judged by the "17th Annual Soccer Club Swap Shop Awards 2009-10" to be the best in the NCEL Premier Division and also placed 32nd nationally in the non-league programme section - finishing above several Conference National teams.

They have produced a fixture list that covers June through to September and you can see it here: Scarborough Athletic FC (Toronto) fixtures

These games (and the small matter of a tournament going on in South Africa) should give all Seadogs a bit of international interest over the Summer.

and yet one more additional PSF announced.

Another pre-season friendly has been arranged by Scarborough Athletic FC.

On Saturday 3rd July a Seadog first-team will lock horns against the well respected Eastfield St James FC, a team that consistently vies for a place at the top of our local Scarborough & District League. The game will be played at Eastway which is located in the village of Eastfield, just outside the town of Scarborough.

During the warm up to last season 'Boro played Eastfield St James at Queensgate and emerged victorious to the tune of 6-2.  It was a good game though and Eastfield showed us what we already knew:  They have very talented lads in their ranks.
