Scarborough Athletic FC: Pre-Season Friendlies Completed for 2010/11

Scarborough Athletic drew 1-1 at Harrogate Railway today to wrap up this seasons series of pre-season friendlies.

Boro took the lead as early as the 4th minute with a 30-yarder from Botham. The Seadogs held on until the last minute when Harrogate Railway equalised with a penalty.

Match report HERE

That concluded our pre-season. All the games were played on the road as our Queensgate home was unavailable due to reseeding work.

The basic stats are as follows: P6 W4 D2 L0 GF20 GA4

Of the six games, three of them took place against teams from the Step 4 Evo-Stick League Division 1 with Boro winning one (at Ossett Albion) and drawing the other two (at Goole AFC and Harrogate Railway).

The other friendlies were at local league Eastfield St James, Step 6 Barton Town Old Boys and of course the Supporters Direct Shield game v Step 6 Merthyr Town (played at  Telford). Boro won all three of these with a varying degree of comfort (0-9, 1-5 & 0-2).

So Boro can boast an unbeaten build-up to the season with the added boost of some silverwear to polish. Not bad at all.

Of course, a good pre-season (or a bad one for that matter) is absolutely no guarantee of how the season proper will pan out but, despite how notoriously unreliable they can be as guides, this set of warm-ups has installed a feeling of optimism at Seadog Blog Towers.

So on this upbeat mood let's bring on the 2010/11 season which starts next Saturday at home against Lincoln Moorlands Railway

Saturday 4th September is NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL DAY

Over the last week Seadog Blog has become aware of a growing on-line campaign to make Saturday 4th September 2010 the "Non-League Football Day".

This particular date has been singled out because it is an International Weekend and there are no Premiership or Championship matches scheduled.

Of course for Seadogs every matchday is a non-league football day - or at least it has been since 8th May 1999 when the old Scarborough F.C. cruelly lost their League status (Thank YOU very much Mr Jimmy Glass if you're reading this) but the real idea is to encourage those fans who would normally attend a top-flight game to seek out their local non-league club and give them a bit of support instead.

There are several ways of getting involved - the primary one must surely be attending a game yourself (bringing a mate or five as well).

You can also show on-line support by both joining the Non-League Football Day Facebook Event page set up by the campaigners and following @non_league_day on twitter (make sure you use the twitter hashtag #nonleagueday on all your Non-League Football Day tweets).

For the record Scarborough Athletic FC will be in FA Vase action at Seaham Red Star.

Bridlington Town Manager In Call For Scarborough Unity

Bridlington Town manager Gary Allanson has written a very interesting article re footballing unity in Scarborough.

His notes were published in the matchday programme for last nights Bridlington Town v Scarborough Town pre-season friendly (a game that may, or may not, have been Scarborough Town's final game of football)

Seadog Blog found it an interesting read, all the more so because it comes from an independent third-party source.

I hope Bridlington Town's programme editors will forgive me for the reproduction. Click on the article to make it full size.

Scarborough Athletic FC Continue Their Good Pre-Season

Scarborough Athletic FC continued their impressive pre-season with  a 1-0 win away at Ossett Albion (of the step 4 Evo-Stick Div 1 (North).

A Scott Phillips penalty was the difference between the two sides but there was no denying that the Seadogs bossed this game and they really ought to have notched up a couple more goals.

A full match report HERE

That was the penultimate friendly of this seasons build up, the final PSF is on Saturday 31st July at Harrogate Railway Athletic FC - also of the Evo-Stick Div 1(N)

Scarborough Athletic FC: Society Newsletter July 2010

Seadog Blog received a nice email from those kind folks at Scarborough Athletic FC. I'd like to share it with you.

Scarborough Athletic FC
Society Newsletter
July 2010

Hi SEADOG BLOG,

Firstly, thank you for your continued support of Scarborough Athletic FC and the club's democratic Society.

The 2010-11 season is upon us, and we all hope that this year will be our year to be triumphant in the league, after a fifth placed finish last year. Brian and the squad are preparing well and this weekend sees the club's first chance of silverware - in the Supporters' Direct Shield against newly formed Merthyr Town and AFC Telford. It will be great to see as many Seadogs down there as possible.

Over the past year the club has progressed massively off the field, with the launch of the Back2Boro campaign (www.back2boro.co.uk), the influx of new volunteers behind the scenes in the areas of finance and memberships, and the creation of a three year business plan, which will be available to members over the next few weeks. We continue to believe that fans-owned clubs are the future of football, and we thank you for your continued support of that initiative through your membership of the SAFC Society.

This newsletter gives all the details of how YOU can stand for election to the board of Scarborough Athletic FC. The club's annual elections take place to freshen up the board and bring in new members with new skills and enthusiasm. If you would like to stand as a candidate for a position with SAFC, please download the newsletter in full below.

This email is the gateway to the actual PDF version of the newsletter, and has been produced using the new In Touch system provided by Supporters Direct. If you come across any problems with the links or newsletter, please let us know via this email: info@scarboroughathletic.com

To download the full newsletter follow this Link
Don't forget that you can also purchase your season tickets, new club shirts and other items at our new and improved webshop. Visit this link for more information

And we urge you to think how much a Boro goal is worth... join the Goal-den Pledge for as little as 25p per goal, and create some extra funds for the club and local charity St. Catherine's Hospice. Go here for more information

And finally... YOU can help YOUR club in any number of ways, from sponsorships and advertising, to volunteering on matchdays with selling programmes, or even commentary on SeadogsLive. If you want to help contact us via email here: info@scarboroughathletic.com

Goole AFC 2-2 Scarborough Athletic (Friendly)

Whilst Seadog Blog watched the reserves play at Filey, the first team squad travelled to Goole for their third warm-up game of the season.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw, a good result away at a team one level up from the Seadogs.

Boro's two goals came from Botham (2 mins) and Hartley (14 mins).

Att 141

Cheers to James Hunter for this pic of Hartley slotting in his goal

Scarborough Athletic Reserves 1 - 2 Otley Town (Pre-Season Friendly)

Seadog Blog nipped down to Filey to see the reserve team play the first game at their new Filey Community Sports Complex (FCSC) home. The visitors were Otley Town FC of the  West Yorkshire League Premier Division.

The FCSC consists of a very spacious clubhouse (didn't go inside), two full sized football pitches and a rugby pitch.

The pitch used for this game consisted of one fenced side (plastic tape) with the dug-outs opposite. Nothing behind either goal.  All three of the pitches are orientated north - south.

Apparently this was the first ever game of association football ever played at the FCSC, so a little bit of history was witnessed by a "clicker count" crowd of 38.

The game kicked off 17 minutes late (I think the Otley bus was delayed en-route) and the first half was ruined somewhat by strong north-westerly winds and occasional lashing rain.

Boro could not get the ball out of their own half, the wind making long clearances nigh on impossible, Otley took full advantage of the conditions and pressed continuously. Boro's keeper and the defence worked overtime.

Otley's first goal, when it came, was a very strange affair. Everybody presumed an Otley forward to be offside and stopped playing as the ball trickled into the far corner of the net - I think even the lino had his flag raised, but the ref had other ideas and after a brief chat with the lino awarded the goal - bizzare but to be truthful the lead was no less than Otley deserved.

Ironically the wind died down quite a bit for the second half so it was more of an even contest - bad luck for our ressies though!

Otley soon doubled their lead when the Boro keeper ran out from his goal to clear - unfortunately he was beaten to the ball by an Otley man who jigged round the stranded keeper and sent a very good cross over which was headed into the unguarded net.

Boro ressies huffed and puffed throughout the second spell but created very little in the way of chances, the final ball oft going awry. Many of the team will be new to each other and that definitely showed at times.

Boro's second string did get some joy towards the end. A Boro forward was clumsily bundled down in the box and the resulting penalty was dispatched with aplomb by Callum Reid.

That was the end of the chances and shortly thereafter the final whistle was blown.

An enjoyable day though and nice to tick off a new venue. If you ever drop in to watch the reserves make sure you are suitably attired as the ground is very exposed - you can take cover in the clubhouse though if you really need to.

Sorry for not mentioning many players by name - there were several unfamiliar faces and no team-sheet available.  I recognised Callum Reid, James Webb and Mike Gravill

Scarborough Athletic FC: - The "Goal-den Pledge" Is Back For 2010/11

The Goal-den Pledge is back for the new season!

The Goal-den Pledge is a scheme set up by Scarborough Athletic FC, in partnership with sponsors Hanson Cooling Services Ltd, in which supporters can pledge an amount per goal scored during the 2010-11 season.

These pledges will be totalled together and split 50/50 between Scarborough Athletic FC and Saint Catherine’s Hospice in a unique fundraising system of mutual benefit.

A minimum pledge of 25p per goal is required, although supporters can pledge as much as they like – and are encouraged to do so!

Last season the scheme raised approximately £1,300.

Scarborough Athletic FC - New Home & Away Kit 2010/11

Scarborough Athletic FC have unvieled details of the new home and away kit for next season.

Manufactured by Errea, they look very smart indeed.

The home shirt is sponsored by Shoreline Suncruisers and is in the traditional all red.

The away shirt is a snazzy, white with red & blue design. The sponsor is Harpers Fish & Chips of Staxton.

Nice to hear that Hanson Cooling Services are continuing their kind sponsorship, it worked well last season helping to raise funds both for the club and the wonderful St Catherines Hospice via the "Goal-den Pledge" scheme (more of which later).

Seadog Blog is very happy with the new kit, and a big thank you to the sponsors. In our short history we have not had much luck with replica kit (none of it the fault of the club) with factory delays etc affecting sales. I won't mention last seasons strip. This all looks to be history now though and I hope all supporters feel inclined to order a shirt. I will be doing so.

Full details (and how to buy!) are here: Scarborough Athletic Official Site

Scarborough Athletic FC - FA Cup & Vase - The Definates & The Maybe's

The draws for the early stages of the FA Cup (sponsored by E.ON) and the FA Carlsberg Vase have been made. This is how it all affects Scarborough Athletic FC

Firstly the FA Cup:

First hurdle for Scarborough Athletic is:

EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND (Saturday 14th August) Ryton v Scarborough Athletic.

Second hurdle:

PRELIMINARY ROUND (Saturday 28th August) Brandon United or Chester-le-Street Town v Ryton or Scarborough Athletic

Third hurdle:

FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING ROUND (Saturday 11th September) Whitehaven or Team Northumbria or Norton & Stockton Ancients or Penrith v Brandon United or Chester-le-Street Town or Ryton or Scarborough Athletic

Phew! Quite a few either/or's there!! Let us hope that it is Scarborough Athletic who rise and progress to the 2nd Qualification Round!

The only definite thing is that the Seadogs will be traveling to Ryton for the first of the ties. Ryton play in the Northern League Division One. Their home is the Kingsley Park Stadium.

Ryton FC's WIKI page gives a little bit more information about them.

And now onto the FA Vase:

First hurdle:

FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING (Saturday 4th September) Seaham Red Star v Scarborough Athletic

Second hurdle:

SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING (Saturday 18th September) Seaham Red Star or Scarborough Athletic v Crook Town or Team Northumbria

Third hurdle:

FIRST ROUND PROPER (Saturday 2nd October) Seaham Red Star or Scarborough Athletic or Crook Town or Team Northumbria v Bridlington Town.

So a possible FA Vase rematch with our Landlords Bridlington Town waits in the wings.

Last season the two clubs met at the 2nd Round stage of the Vase with Bridlington running out 5-2 winners in front of a 1002 crowd. Chance of revenge perchance?

But let us not get too far ahead of ourselves here, much water to pass under the bridge before that particular tie materialises. Once again the only definate is the Seaham Red Star tie.

Seaham Red Star play in the Northern League Division Two at Seaham Town Park (which has a capacity of just 500 hundred according to WIKI).

Have a look at Seaham Red Stars WIKI page for further team information.
